Turtle Pair Breakup 115 Years, Turtle Love: 115 Years Is Long Enough For Turtles: You might want to avoid this story if you’re feeling particularly weepy today… We are raised in a society where we are told that our “perfect match” is out there somewhere.
Movies, TV, music, everything is geared towards this thought; hell, even some animals are subscribing to this belief.
But, alas, all good things must come to an end, as we learned first-hand from once long-time loves Bibi and Poldi. Bibi and Poldi are giant turtles and have been together for the last 115 years–that’s much longer than anyone alive today can remember.
They have been sharing a cage together at the Austrian Zoo in Blagenfurt for the last 36 years.
Before moving to the Austrian Zoo, the couple lived together at the Basel Zoo in Switzerland.
Austrian Zoo boss Helga Happ explained, “They have been together since they were young and grew up together, eventually becoming a pair. But for no reason that anyone can discover, they seem to have fallen out. We get the feeling they can’t stand the sight of each other anymore.”
Zoo staff noticed the turtles had a falling out when Bibi attacked Poldi, biting off a chunk of his shell. Giant turtles don’t have teeth, but they DO have a horn-rimmed mouth and mega-powerful jaws that can do lots of damage when used properly.
The zoo staff assumed it was a confined incident and continued to monitor the two–maybe they thought Bibi and Poldi were just imitating those guys in Florida?—when several more attacks occurred in their shared quarters.
Bibi was ultimately removed from the cage and placed in her own area for the safety of both animals. The Giant turtle DOES have the capability of killing another if provoked.
