Congressman John Ensign Admits Affair With Cynthia Hampton, His Campaign Treasurer, Doug Hampton says Ensign paid cynthia hampton $25,000 severance,---Cindy Hampton, a former campaign aide to Nevada GOP Senator John Ensign, was also once his mistress, alleges the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The 46-year-old Cindy Hampton is married to Douglas Hampton, Senator Ensign's former legislative aide.
Senator John Ensign has admitted to having an extramarital affair, but did not specifically identity Cindy Hampton as his former mistress.
However, multiple media outlets are reporting that sources close to Ensign have confirmed that Cindy Hampton was Senator Ensign's mistress. Senator Ensign confessed to the extramarital affair at a press conference Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas.
"I came back home to Nevada to come forward and explain to the citizens of our state something that I was involved in about a year ago," said Ensign of his extramarital affair that allegedly involved former campaign aide Cindy Hampton. "Last year I had an affair.
I violated the vows of my marriage." Senator Ensign also noted that he has taken full responsibility for the affair and has apologized to his family, friends and staff. He also said that he and his wife Darlene have gone through counseling and have "rebuilt our marriage to where now it is even stronger than ever."
Some news outlets are reporting that Senator Ensign decided to confess to his extramarital affair because Cindy Hampton and Douglas Hampton offered to sell him their silence. In other words, they attempted to extort money from him. Ensign has refused to comment on the matter, however. There has been talk that Senator Ensign, who is a rising star within the GOP, is considering a run for the White House in 2012.
And since Senator Ensign says that he has no intention of resigning from the Senate, this may indeed be true. No doubt partisans on the other side of the political isle will have a field day with Senator Ensign's confession of infidelity. Especially since he is a member of Promise Keepers, an Evangelical organization that champions the virtues of marital fidelity. But marital infidelity is something of a non-partisan issue. In other words, prominent politicians of all political stripes have been guilty of it.
Take former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, for example. Edwards, a staunch liberal, admitted to having an affair in 2006 with film maker Rielle Hunter. So partisans can have at Senator Ensign all they want. But perhaps they also ought to remember what the Bible says: "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
