Is Bear Spray Illegal In Canada---Canada allows bear spray: Jeremy Meadus, the owner of OP Fishing & Hunting in Mount Pearl, says bear spray has been flying off his store shelves since recent incidents on the northeast Avalon Peninsula where bear spray was used to assault people.
"We sold out [of bear spray] about a week ago," said Meadus.
Meadus said more customers started buying bear spray at his shop in July, after a convenience store clerk was sprayed in the face with the substance during a robbery.
This past weekend, a full can of the spray was discharged on a crowd on George Street.
However, Meadus said his customers told him they had other plans for their purchases.
"Most people say they intend on using it for their own protection when they're spending time in the outdoors," said Meadus.
Health Canada regulates bear spray and other animal repellants and using these repellants as a weapon, or even protection against other humans, is illegal.
Meadus gives customers a form to fill out when they buy the substance.
